Acetic Acid (CH3COOH) is a colorless, pungent-smelling carboxylic acid, best known as the main component of vinegar (typically 4-8% diluted). It is a weak acid. It is an important industrial chemical used in plastics, coatings and solvents. It is commonly known as Glacial Acetic Acid when in its pure, anhydrous form.
Applications of Acetic Acid:
Chemical Production (Major Use): It is used to produce vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), which is crucial for making plastics, adhesives and paints. It is also used to produce cellulose acetate (photographic film/fibers), acetic anhydride and solvents.
Textiles and Fabrics: It is employed in the production of rayon fiber, dyeing and treating fabrics.
Food Industry: It is utilized as a food additive (E260) for preservation, acidification and in the production of condiments, pickled items and vinegar.
Pharmaceuticals: It is used as a solvent or reagent in the production of aspirin, antibiotics and in medicinal formulations.
Agriculture and Cleaning: It is used in producing herbicides and pesticides. It is also used as a cleaning agent in household, industrial and food-preparation environments.
Other Applications: It is used in the production of rubber, plastics and in clinical labs for testing.
