Aluminum Sulphate (Non-Ferric Alum)

Aluminum Sulphate Al2(SO4), also known as Non-Ferric Alum Lumps,  commonly known as filter alum, is a white crystalline or liquid compound primarily used as a coagulant in water treatment to remove impurities. It is highly soluble in water and is extensively used in paper manufacturing, sewage treatment, dyeing textiles, and reducing soil pH.

Applications of Aluminum Sulphate:

• Water and Sewage Treatment: It is used as a flocculant, it causes suspended particles to clump together, which are then easily removed, aiding in the purification of drinking water and treatment of wastewater.

• Paper Industry: It serves as a sizing agent, improving ink absorption, increasing paper density and smoothing the surface.

• Agriculture and Gardening: It is used to adjust soil pH to be more acidic, which is essential for certain plants (e.g., changing hydrangea colors to blue).

• Textile Manufacturing: It is used as a mordant in dyeing processes, helping to fix dyes onto fabrics.

• Construction: It acts as an accelerator in concrete mixtures to speed up setting times.

• Personal Care and Medical: Its astringent properties make it useful in styptic pencils for treating minor cuts and in antiperspirants.

• Other Uses: Included in firefighting foam, used for pond clarification and in some food-grade applications.
