Ammonium Bifluoride (NH4HF2 or NH4F.HF) is a white, strongly hygroscopic, water-soluble crystalline salt used primarily for glass etching, metal surface treatment (aluminum anodizing, steel pickling), oil well acidification and as a disinfectant. It acts as a substitute for hydrofluoric Acid ( HF) due to its safer handling, though it remains a corrosive chemical, with a density of 1.5 gm/Cm3 and melting point of 124-125 degree centigrade. Ammonium Bifluoride is an industrial chemical used primarily for etching and frosting glass, cleaning metal surfaces (Aluminum & Steel) and treating oil & gas wells to dissolve silica. It also serves as a wood preservative, laundry sour and in electroplating. It is highly corrosive and toxic.

Applications of Ammonium Bifluoride:

Glass Industry: It is used for frosting and etching surfaces, including mirrors, glassware and light bulbs.
Metal Treatment & Surface Finishing:
Aluminum: It is used as a mordant and for brightening and anodizing.
Steel: It acts as a cleaning and pickling agent, specifically for removing rust.

Laundry: It functions as a sour to remove iron stains.
