Citric Acid Monohydrate (C₆H₈O₇·H₂O) is a white, crystalline weak organic acid containing one water molecule. Citric Acid is found naturally in citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges) that provides a sour taste. Citric Acid is commonly used as a sour flavoring agent, preservative and pH control agent (E330) in foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics & Cleaning Products. It is highly soluble in water and acts as a chelating agent in cleaning products.
Applications of Citric Acid Monohydrate:
Citric Acid Monohydrate (C6H8O7.H2O) Food and Beverage Industry (Main Application):
Flavoring: Citric Acid is used for citrusy taste to soft drinks, fruit juices, sweets, confectionery and jellies.
Preservation: Citric Acid functions as an antimicrobial agent in jams, jellies and sauces, preventing spoilage and extending shelf life.
Acidity Regulation: Citric Acid controls pH in dairy products (like processed cheese) and improves protein coagulation.
Antioxidant: Citric Acid interrupts the formation of peroxides to prevent rancidity in oils and inhibits discoloration in seafood and fruits.
Leavening: It is used in combination with baking soda as a leavening agent for baked goods.
Personal Care:
pH Adjuster/Buffering: Citric Acid maintains optimal pH levels in lotions, shampoos and cosmetic creams to match skin chemistry.
Exfoliant: It acts as a mild exfoliant in skin care products.
Industrial and Technical Applications:
Cleaning and Descaling: It is used in household and industrial cleaners for removing limescale and rust from metal surfaces, such as heat exchangers.
Textile Processing: It is used as a pH regulator in dyeing to ensure consistent, vibrant colors and as a fabric finishing agent.
Water Treatment: It chelates magnesium and calcium ions to reduce water hardness and prevent pipe scaling.
Chemical Synthesis: It acts as a buffering agent and chelator in chemical reactions.
