Copper Sulfate is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula CuSO4. It is most commonly found as a bright blue, crystalline solid known as copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate CuSO4.5H2O or "bluestone".  It is widely used in agriculture, industry and laboratories due to its biocidal properties and high solubility in water. It is used extensively as a fungicide, algaecide, root killer and industrial agent. It is highly soluble in water. It acts mainly as a fungicide, algaecide, herbicide and disinfectant.

Applications of Copper Sulfate:

Agriculture and Gardening:

  • Fungicide & Bactericide: It is a major component of Bordeaux mixture (CuSO4 + Lime) and Burgundy mixture, used to combat downy mildew, blight and leaf spot on fruit trees, vines and vegetables.

  • Algaecide: Copper Sulfate controls algae in irrigation systems, ponds and water tanks.

  • Herbicide: Copper Sulfate is used to control rooted aquatic plants in waterways.

  • Soil Amendment: Copper Sulfate is applied to soil to correct copper deficiency, vital for plant photosynthesis and enzyme function.

  • Molluscicide: Copper Sulfate acts as bait to eliminate snails and slugs in gardens.

  • Wood Preservative: Copper Sulfate treats wooden posts to prevent rot and termites.

Industrial Applications:

  • Mining: Copper Sulfate is used as an activator in froth flotation processes, specifically to separate gold, zinc, lead and cobalt ores.

  • Electroplating: Copper Sulfate is used in baths to coat metals with a layer of copper for corrosion resistance or decoration.

  • Textiles: It acts as a mordant (dye fixative) to improve the vibrancy and durability of colors on fabrics.

  • Paints: It is used as a pigment in blue paints and as a biocide in antifouling marine paints.

  • Chemical Synthesis: It acts as a raw material in the production of other copper compounds.

Water Treatment & Safety:

  • Pools & Reservoirs: Copper Sulfate controls algae in swimming pools and drinking water reservoirs.

  • Root Killer: It is applied directly to sewer lines to kill tree roots that cause clogging and damage to pipes.

  • Anti-Fouling Paints: Ingredient in marine paints to prevent algae, barnacles and mussels from growing on ships.

Laboratory and Education:

  • Analytical Reagent: Copper Sulfate is extremely important in Benedict's solution and Fehling's solution to detect reducing sugars.

  • Biuret Test: Copper Sulfate is used to identify the presence of proteins.

  • Water Detection: Anhydrous copper sulphate (white) turns blue upon hydration, indicating the presence of water in solvents.
