Hydrated Lime Powder or Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2, is a fine, white, alkaline powder. Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) is a dry, colorless crystalline powder manufactured by treating calcium oxide (quicklime) with water, in a process called "slaking."  It is known for its high pH (~12.4).  It is used as a binder in mortars/plasters, a water treatment agent, soil stabilizer and in industrial chemical processing. It has many names including Slaked lime, Calcium hydroxide, Builders' lime, Caustic lime, Slack lime, Cal, Pickling lime, Chuna (in some regions).

Applications of Hydrated Lime Powder:

  • Construction & Building:

  • Mortar and Plaster: Hydrated Lime Powder improves workability, water retention and durability of masonry mortars, plasters and stucco.

  • Soil Stabilization: It enhances the engineering properties of weak soil for roads, airfields and building foundations.

  • Limewash Paint: It is used as a traditional, breathable paint for buildings.

  • Asphalt: Hydrated Lime Powder functions as an anti-strip agent to bond aggregate to asphalt cement.

  • Environmental & Water Treatment:

  • Wastewater Treatment: Hydrated Lime Powder is used to adjusts pH, softens water and removes heavy metals and impurities.

  • Flue Gas Treatment: It removes acidic gases (such as sulfur dioxide) from industrial exhaust, helping control air pollution.

  • Sludge Treatment: Hydrated Lime Powder helps in stabilizing sludge.

  • Agriculture & Food Production:

  • Soil Amendment: Hydrated Lime Powder increases the pH of acidic soils, improving nutrient availability.

  • Fungicide/Pest Control: It is used in Bordeaux mixture to fight plant diseases and for tree trunk whitewashing to deter pests.

  • Sugar Refining: It is used to remove impurities during the processing of sugar beets and cane.

  • Food Additive: It is used in the preparation of corn products (nixtamalization).

  • Industrial & Chemical Applications:

  • Chemical Manufacturing: It is used in producing calcium compounds, such as calcium stearate, hypochlorite and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC).

  • Steel/Metallurgical Industry: Hydrated Lime Powder acts as a fluxing agent to remove impurities like sulfur and phosphorus from molten metal.

  • Mining: Hydrated Lime Powder acts as a pH regulator in gold mining.

  • Leather Processing: It helps in the removal of hair from animal hides.

  • Other Uses:

  • Acid Spill Remediation: Hydrated Lime Powder neutralizes hazardous acid spills, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, for safe cleanup.

  • Sterilization: Hydrated Lime Powder is used as a sanitizing agent in farms.
