Liquid Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) is commonly known as water glass or liquid glass, is a viscous, sticky, alkaline solution, typically composed of sodium oxide (Na2O) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) dissolved in water. It is used widely in industrial applications, it serves as a strong adhesive, binder in concrete, detergent builder, binder & sealant due to its ability to solidify and resist heat. It effectively hardens concrete, fireproofs materials and acts as a flocculant in water treatment.
Applications of Liquid Sodium Silicate (Na₂SiO₃):
Applications of Liquid Sodium Silicate:
Construction & Infrastructure: It is used as a quick-setting agent for concrete, a sealer to reduce porosity and in waterproofing cement/plaster. It hardens concrete floors and improves durability against chemical attack.
Adhesives & Binders: It acts as an adhesive for corrugated cardboard, paper tubes, foundry molds and abrasive wheels. It serves as a binder in high-temperature refractories and acid-proof cements.
Detergents & Cleaning Agents: It is used in laundry and dishwashing detergents as a builder (softening water) and to prevent corrosion of washing machine parts.
Water Treatment & Corrosion Control: It treats potable water and industrial cooling systems to inhibit corrosion in pipes. It can also help remove heavy metals.
Paper & Textile Industry: It functions as a bleaching agent for paper pulp, a paper tube adhesive and a dyeing assistant in textiles to improve dye fixation.
Chemical & Mining Industry: It is used in the production of silica gel, zeolite molecular sieves and as a flocculant in ore flotation.
Other Uses: Includes soil stabilization, producing fire-resistant coatings and preserving eggs (as a historical and modern application).
