Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) is an odorless, dark purple, sand- like solid. It a strong inorganic oxidizing agent and antiseptic appearing as dark purple crystals, often called Condy's crystals or permanganate of potash. It is widely used in water treatment, industrial chemical production and as a disinfectant for skin conditions like fungal infections. It is also used as a  deodorizer, bleaching agent and in air and water purification.

Applications of Potassium Permanganate:

  • Water Treatment and Environmental:

  • Water Purification: It removes iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from well water.

  • Wastewater Treatment: It removes contaminants and controls odor.

  • Fish Farming: It treats diseases and parasites in fish.

  • Industrial and Chemical Uses:

  • Oxidizing Agent: It is widely used in organic chemistry synthesis and laboratory analysis (e.g., Baeyer's reagent).

  • Bleaching: It is used in the textile, paper and leather industries.

  • Fruit Preservation: It preserves fruits by destroying ethylene, increasing storage life.

  • Antifungal: It is used as a fungicidal agent.
