Sodium Bisulphite (NaHSO₃) is also known as Sodium Hydrogen Sulfite is a white, crystalline, inorganic salt with a slight sulfurous odor is a white, crystalline inorganic compound with a slight sulfurous odor, commonly used as a reducing agent, preservative and antioxidant. It is highly soluble in water, creating a slightly acidic solution. It is widely applied in food preservation, water treatment (dechlorination) and industrial processes like papermaking and photography. It prevents food browning, disinfects, removes excess chlorine from water and acts as a stabilizer in pharmaceuticals.

Applications of Sodium Bisulphite:

• Food Preservation: It is commonly used as a food preservative and antioxidant to prevent enzymatic browning in dried fruits, potatoes and seafood. It also prevents oxidation and microbial growth in wine, preserving flavor.

• Water Treatment: It acts as a deoxygenating agent in water treatment, removing residual chlorine and dissolved oxygen from industrial water systems and municipal water supplies.

• Pulp and Paper Industry: It is utilized in the paper-making process for pulping wood and as a bleaching agent.

• Leather Processing: It is used in the leather tanning industry for hair removal and de-liming hides.

• Chemical Manufacturing: It is used as a reducing agent in chemical synthesis and to purify aldehydes and ketones by forming crystalline bisulfite addition compounds.

• Textile and Dyeing: It is used as a bleaching agent and for stripping colors in the textile industry.

• Mining: Sodium Bisulphite is used in the extraction of certain metals and for cleaning equipment.

• Pharmaceuticals: Sodium Bisulphite is used as an antioxidant to maintain the stability of various pharmaceutical formulations.
