Sodium Hydrosulfite (Na2S2O4) is also known as sodium dithionite. It is a powerful, white crystalline water-soluble reducing agent with a faint sulfurous odor. It is widely used in industry for vat dyeing (especially indigo), bleaching textiles (cotton/wool) and deinking recycled paper. It acts as a decolourising agent, removing rust stains and whitening and is highly reactive.
Applications of Sodium Hydrosulfite:
Textile Industry: It is very important for vat dyeing (reducing insoluble dyes to soluble leuco-dyes) and stripping color from dyed fabrics.
Pulp & Paper Industry: It is used as a bleaching agent to increase brightness in mechanical pulp and for deinking recycled fibers.
Water Treatment: Sodium hydrosulfite is used as a deoxygenator and to remove heavy metals and pollutants from effluent water.
Chemical Processing: It is used as a reducing agent in organic synthesis, polymer production and mineral flotation.
Cleaning & Household: Sodium hydrosulfite acts as a rust remover and a color-stripper for laundry.
Food Industry: It is used as a preservative or bleaching agent in certain food products (e.g., starch, molasses) in some jurisdictions.
Photography: It is used as a reducing agent in some photographic developer formulations.
Leather Industry: It is used in the bleaching and processing of leather.
