Sodium Sulfate (Na2SO4) is a white, inorganic crystalline solid or powder that is highly soluble in water. It is widely used as a cheap filler in powdered laundry detergents, in the Kraft process for paper pulping, in glass manufacturing and as a drying agent in laboratories. It exists in anhydrous (thenardite) and decahydrate (Glauber's salt) forms, with massive annual production, mainly for industrial applications.
Applications of Sodium Sulfate:
Primary Industrial Applications:
Detergent Filler: The largest use is in powdered household laundry detergents, where it acts as a filler (filler) to provide volume, improve flowability and optimize concentration.
Paper Production (Kraft Process): It is used as a raw material in the Kraft pulping process to make wood pulp into paper, helping to break down wood fibers.
Glass Manufacturing: Sodium Sulfate acts as a fining agent in the production of glass, removing small air bubbles and preventing scum formation in molten glass.
Textile Dyeing: It is employed as a leveling agent to ensure even dye absorption, reducing the negative charge on fibers for uniform color.
Chemical and Lab Uses:
Drying Agent: Anhydrous sodium sulfate is a widely used inert desiccant in organic synthesis laboratories to remove trace moisture from organic solvents.
Chemical Production: It is used in manufacturing sodium silicate, sodium sulfide and other chemical products.
Medical and Daily Use:
Laxative: Sodium Sulfate is known as Glauber’s salt (decahydrate form), it acts as a saline laxative to treat constipation or purge the colon before medical procedures.
Food Additive: Sodium Sulfate acts as an acidity regulator and processing aid in specific foods.
Other Applications:
Thermal Storage: Due to its high heat of fusion, it is used in phase-change materials for thermal energy storage systems.
Agricultural Conditioning: Sodium Sulfate is used in soil conditioning to improve structure in specific cases.
