Sodium Sulfite (Na2SO3) is a white, water-soluble, odorless inorganic compound used primarily as a preservative, antioxidant and dechlorinating agent. It acts as a reducing agent in industrial, food and photographic applications to prevent oxygen damage and spoilage. It is widely used for preventing discoloration in dried foods and maintaining product stability.
Applications of Sodium Sulfite:
Sodium Sulfite (Na2SO3) is a versatile inorganic compound, widely used as a reducing agent, antioxidant and preservative across various industries.
Primary Industrial Applications:
Pulp and Paper Industry: Sodium Sulfite is used for pulping wood, helping to break down lignin and as a bleaching agent to improve paper whiteness.
Water Treatment: Sodium Sulfite acts as an oxygen scavenger to remove dissolved oxygen in boiler water, preventing corrosion in pipes. It also dechlorinates water in wastewater treatment.
Textile and Dyeing: Sodium Sulfite is used as an anti-chlor to remove excess chlorine after bleaching processes and to bleach wool & silk.
Leather Tanning: Sodium Sulfite is used in the sulfitization of tanning extracts to ensure softness, pliability and color stability in leather.
Photography: Sodium Sulfite acts as a preservative in photographic developer solutions to prevent oxidation.
Food & Consumer Goods:
Food Preservation (E221): Sodium Sulfite is used as a preservative in dried fruits (e.g., raisins, apricots) to prevent browning and maintain color. It is also used to preserve processed meats.
Cosmetics: Sodium Sulfite is used in hair dyes and wave/straightening products as an antioxidant and fixing agent.
Chemical & Mining Applications:
Chemical Manufacturing: Sodium Sulfite serves as a raw material for producing sodium thiosulfate (hypo), dyes, pigments and detergents.
Mining: Sodium Sulfite is used in the flotation of ores to separate minerals and to destroy excess cyanide in tailings.
