Sodium Thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is a colorless, inorganic crystalline compound commonly known as "hypo" or sodium hyposulfite.  It acts as a versatile reducing agent and chelator, with the pentahydrate (Na2S2O3.5H2O) form being the most common. It is a versatile reducing agent used primarily to fix photographs, dechlorinate water (in aquariums and municipal systems) and as a medical antidote for cyanide poisoning. It is highly soluble in water.

Applications of Sodium Thiosulfate:

Medical Treatment (Antidote/Protective Agent):

  • Cyanide Poisoning: It acts as an antidote by converting cyanide into non-toxic thiocyanate.

  • Chemotherapy Protection: It reduces the toxicity (specifically ototoxicity/hearing loss) of cisplatin in children.

  • Dermatology: It is used topically to treat fungal infections such as tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor).

  • Calciphylaxis: It is used to treat vascular calcification in dialysis patients.

Industrial and Chemical Uses:

  • Photography: Sodium Thiosulfate is known as a "hypo" fixer, it dissolves unexposed silver halides from photographic film and paper.

  • Water Treatment: Sodium Thiosulfate dechlorinates water, removing chlorine from pools and industrial effluents.

  • Textile & Paper Industry: It functions as a bleaching agent and removes excess dyes.

  • Gold Extraction: It is used in the mining industry for extracting gold from ore.

  • Analytical Chemistry: It is used in iodometric titrations.
