Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) is an inorganic, white crystalline compound known for being highly soluble in water and strongly hygroscopic (absorbs water from air). It is commonly used as a soldering flux, in electroplating, as a wood preservative and in manufacturing textiles and chemicals. It is corrosive and commonly referred to as "butter of zinc". Zinc Chloride is highly soluble in water and exists in several crystalline forms, commonly appearing as white or colorless deliquescent crystals.

Applications of Zinc Chloride:

Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) is a versatile inorganic compound used heavily as a metallurgical flux, Lewis acid catalyst in chemical synthesis and dehydrating agent. It is widely applied in textile processing, wood preservation, battery electrolytes and as a soldering agent to remove metal oxides. It also serves in petroleum refining, wastewater treatment and medical applications.

Industrial Applications:

  • Metallurgical Flux and Soldering: Zinc Chloride is primary used as a flux in galvanizing, tinning and soldering, where it removes oxide layers from metal surfaces to allow molten metal to flow and bond properly.

  • Chemical Synthesis and Catalysis: It acts as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic chemistry, particularly in the production of dyes, intermediates and medications. It is used in the synthesis of benzaldehyde, ethyl acetate and anion exchange resins.

  • Textile Processing: Zinc Chloride is used in the textile industry as a mordant in dyeing, a mercerizing agent and a weight-gaining agent. It is also used in manufacturing vulcanized fiber.

  • Petroleum Industry: It is applied as an emulsion breaker to separate oil from water and as a purifying agent in oil refining.

  • Wood Preservation: It is known for protecting wood from insects and decay by acting as a preservative.

Chemical and Manufacturing Applications:

  • Batteries: Zinc chloride serves as an electrolyte in dry-cell batteries.

  • Desiccant and Dehydrating Agent: Due to its highly hygroscopic nature, it is used to absorb moisture in various chemical processes.

  • Pigment Production: Zinc Chloride is used in the creation of white pigments.

  • Smoke Grenades: Zinc chloride is a component in the "HC" smoke mixture used in military-grade smoke grenades.

Other Applications:

  • Agriculture: Zinc Chloride is used to improve crop yield by correcting zinc deficiency and reducing salinity in soil.

  • Medical & Personal Care: Zinc Chloride is used as a disinfecting agent, in antiseptic mouthwashes, deodorant products and as an ingredient in dandruff shampoos.

  • Wastewater Treatment: Zinc Chloride acts as a clarifying agent in water treatment facilities.
