Ammonium Chloride (NH4Cl) is a white, odorless, crystalline inorganic salt that is highly soluble in water, forming a mildly acidic solution. It is primarily used as a nitrogen fertilizer, a soldering flux and in various industrial applications like dry cells and flavoring. It forms naturally as salt deposits (sal ammoniac). Ammonium chloride is a versatile white crystalline salt widely used as a nitrogen fertilizer (especially for rice) and electrolyte in dry cell batteries and a flux in metal galvanizing and soldering.

Applications of Ammonium Chloride:

  • Agriculture: Primarily it is used as a source of nitrogen in fertilizers, particularly for paddy rice & wheat crops.

  • Industrial Applications:

  • Flux: It is used in soldering, brazing and galvanizing to clean surfaces by removing metal oxides.

  • Batteries: It serves as an electrolyte in zinc-carbon dry cells.

  • Manufacturing: It is used in the production of cleaning products, dyeing & printing textiles and leather tanning.

  • Food Industry: It is known as sal ammoniac or food additive, it adds a salty & bitter flavor to liquor ice and improves the crispness of baked goods.

  • Other Uses: It is employed in laboratory cooling baths, as a cleaner in metalwork and to create photographic light-sensitive halide crystals.
