Ferric Chloride Anhydrous FeCl3 is a powerful, water-free inorganic salt. It appears as dark green-to-brown crystals and acts as a strong Lewis acid and oxidizing agent. It is highly reactive, absorbs moisture from the air, and dissolves efficiently in water to create highly acidic solutions. It is a highly reactive, hygroscopic crystalline solid. It is primarily utilized as an industrial-grade copper etchant, a strong Lewis acid catalyst for organic synthesis, and a chemical oxidant.
Applications of Ferric Chloride Anhydrous:
Water & Wastewater Treatment:
Coagulant & Flocculant: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous Neutralizes suspended particles and forces them to clump together (flocculation) so they settle to the bottom, making it highly effective for drinking water purification.
Sludge Dewatering: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous enhances the thickening and drying of sewage sludge in municipal treatment plants.
Contaminant Removal: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous helps remove phosphates to reduce algae growth, as well as binding to heavy metals and eliminating foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide.
Electronics & Manufacturing:
PCB Etching: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous is used as an etching agent in the electronics industry to dissolve exposed copper, allowing the creation of complex circuit designs on copper-clad printed circuit boards.
Metal Surface Treatment: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous acts as a pickling and surface-treating agent for various metals to prepare them for coating or finishing.
Chemical Synthesis & Lab Applications:
Catalyst: Due to strong Lewis acid, Ferric Chloride Anhydrous is frequently used to catalyze organic reactions, including Friedel-Crafts alkylations and acylations.
Oxidizing Agent: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous is utilized in the production of dyes (such as Indigo blue) and various pharmaceutical intermediates.
Specialty Applications:
Oil Drilling: Sometimes Ferric Chloride Anhydrous is used as an additive in offshore oil drilling to decompose rocks/sludge in wells, releasing entrapped oil for easier extraction.
Colorimetric Reagents: Ferric Chloride Anhydrous is used in laboratories as a testing reagent to detect the presence of phenols and various organic compounds.
