Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a highly corrosive, strong mineral acid formed by dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water. Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a highly acidic, colorless inorganic compound (aqueous hydrogen chloride gas) with a pungent odor. It is a colorless, pungent liquid (often called Muriatic Acid). Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a versatile, strong acid primarily used for industrial steel pickling, pH control in water treatment and chemical synthesis, including producing PVC and food additives. It is vital for producing pharmaceuticals, cleaning products (descaling) & leather processing.

Applications of Hydrochloric Acid (HCl):

  • Industrial Metal Pickling: The largest use of Hydrochloric Acid is in the steel industry to remove rust, oxides and scale from iron or steel, preparing it for further manufacturing steps.

  • Chemical Production: It is used to manufacture inorganic compounds like calcium chloride (CaCl2), aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2), as well as to produce organic chemicals such as vinyl chloride for PVC plastics.

  • pH Control and Acidification: It is used in the manufacturing of food, beverages and pharmaceuticals to regulate acidity. It is also used to treat water by lowering the pH of swimming pools and in water treatment plants to regenerate ion-exchange resins.

  • Food Industry Applications: Food-grade HCl is used to make hydrolyzed vegetable protein, gelatin and in the acidification of foods.

  • Oil Well Acidizing: In the oil industry, HCl is injected into limestone or dolomite rock formations to dissolve the rock, creating large pores that boost oil and gas production.

  • Household Cleaning: Due to its strong acidity, dilute HCl is used in household cleaning products to remove tough limescale and stains from toilets and tiles.
