Methylene dichloride (CH2Cl2) or dichloromethane (DCM), is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. It is high volatility and ability to dissolve many organic compounds. It is widely used as an industrial solvent, particularly in paint strippers, pharmaceuticals, metal degreasing & and aerosol formulations.

Applications of Methylene dichloride:

  • Paint and Coating Stripping: Methylene dichloride is a dominant ingredient in paint removers and varnishes due to its ability to quickly dissolve coatings without damaging underlying substrates (like metal or wood).

  • Industrial Cleaning and Degreasing: It is used to remove grease and oils from metal surfaces, crucial in aerospace (aircraft components), electronics (cleaning circuit boards) and automotive industries.

  • Foam Blowing Agent: It acts as a blowing agent for polyurethane foam, generating gas to create foam structures.

  • Food and Beverage Manufacturing: It is used as an extraction solvent to remove caffeine from unroasted coffee beans and tea leaves. It is also used to create hops extract for beer and extract spices for flavoring.

  • Chemical Synthesis and Adhesives: It is used as a reaction solvent in the chemical industry for producing polycarbonate resins and as an ingredient in solvent-based adhesives and sealants.

  • Laboratory Solvent: It is commonly used in laboratory settings for analytical chemistry, including chromatography, extraction and sample preparation
