Oxalic Acid (C2H2O4) is a colorless, toxic dicarboxylic acid commonly used as a strong cleaning agent for removing rust, tannin stains and mineral deposits and as a bleaching agent in textiles. It works by chelating metal cations, forming soluble iron complexes. Industrially, it is used as a cleaning agent for removing rust, ink stains and in textile dyeing. Its most widely uses include removing stubborn rust, ink and mineral stains, brightening wood, treating textiles and in industrial metal cleaning or rare-earth mineral processing.

Applications of Oxalic Acid:

  • Rust and Stain Removal: It is a primary ingredient in rust stain removers, cleaning stubborn iron oxide stains from sinks, bathtubs and fabrics.

  • Wood Cleaning and Brightening: It is widely used to bleach wood, remove tannin stains and restore weathered or greyed wood decks and furniture.

  • Industrial Metal Treatment: It is used as a cleaning agent to prepare metal surfaces (e.g., in aluminum anodizing) and for removing rust from machinery.

  • Textile and Pulp Industry: Oxalic Acid functions as a bleaching agent in the textile industry and in processing wood pulp to make paper.

  • Beekeeping: It is used as a safe, effective miticide to control Varroa mites in beehives.

  • Analytical Chemistry: Oxalic Acid acts as a common reducing agent in laboratories for titration.

  • Purification Agent: Oxalic Acid is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce drugs like antibiotics and in the extraction of rare-earth metals.
