Sodium Dichromate (Na₂Cr₂O₇) is a bright orange-red, odorless, crystalline inorganic compound. It is a powerful hexavalent chromium (CrVI) oxidizing agent, highly corrosive and soluble in water. It is commonly handled as a dihydrate. It is primarily used in industrial leather tanning, corrosion inhibition, metal surface treatment and as a precursor to other chromium chemicals. It  is heavily used in metal passivation, corrosion inhibition, pigment manufacturing and wood preservation.

Applications of Sodium Dichromate:

  • Metal Treatment & Corrosion Inhibition: It is heavily used in metal finishing, passivation and as a corrosion inhibitor, particularly in hot-dip galvanizing and protective coatings.

  • Chromium Chemicals Production: It serves as the primary source for producing chrome oxide green, lead chromate, chromium sulfate and other chromium-based pigments.

  • Leather Tanning: It is used in the tanning process to stabilize collagen fibers in hides, increasing durability.

  • Oxidizing Agent: In organic chemistry, it acts as a strong oxidant for producing compounds like Vitamin K and various waxes.

  • Textile Industry: It is used as a mordant in acidic dyes to improve color-fastness.

  • Other Applications: Sodium Dichromate is used in drilling muds (oil industry), wood preservatives, pyrotechnics and to produce colored glass and ceramic glazes.
