Sodium Metasilicate

Sodium Metasilicate (Na₂SiO₃) is a white, water-soluble and highly alkaline compound. It is often known as waterglass or liquid glass. It is widely used as a key ingredient in detergents, industrial cleaners, adhesives and paper deinking due to its excellent emulsifying and suspending properties. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor and concrete sealant.

Applications of Sodium Metasilicate:

• Detergents and Cleaning Products: It is a major component in household and industrial laundry detergents, automatic dishwashing powders and degreasers due to its superior emulsifying, saponifying (breaking down fats) and suspending capabilities.

• Industrial Metal Cleaning: Sodium Metasilicate is used for removing scale, rust and oil from metal surfaces in automotive and machinery cleaning.

• Construction and Cementing: It serves as a binder for cements, refractory materials and as a "water glass" adhesive. It acts as a hardener/densifier for concrete surfaces.

• Oil Well Cements: Sodium Metasilicate is used as an accelerator in cement slurries to increase early strength in oil and gas well cementing.

• Textile and Paper Industry: It acts as a stabilizing agent for hydrogen peroxide in bleaching processes, removes impurities in textile scouring and helps with deinking in paper recycling.

• Water Treatment: Sodium Metasilicate is used to prevent corrosion in pipes and boilers, as well as a corrosion inhibitor in cooling water systems.

• Ceramics and Mining: Sodium Metasilicate acts as a deflocculant (dispersing agent) in ceramic formulations and as a dispersant for ore slurries.

• Other Uses: Sodium Metasilicate is used in fireproofing materials, manufacturing silica gel, egg preservation and specialized cleaning in the food industry.
