Sodium Nitrite

Sodium Nitrite (NaNO2) is a white-to-yellowish, water-soluble crystalline salt. It is used in industrial processes (metal finishing) and as a medical antidote for cyanide poisoning. It is used primarily as a food preservative and color fixative to prevent bacterial growth.

Applications of Sodium Nitrite:

• Food Preservation: It is extremely important for curing meat and fish.

• Food Color Fixative: It imparts a characteristic pink/red color to processed meats.

• Industrial Corrosion Inhibitor: It is used in industrial lubricants, antifreeze and closed-loop cooling systems as a, aqueous solution to prevent corrosion in steel and metal machinery.

• Chemical Manufacturing: Sodium Nitrate is a vital raw material for the manufacturing of diazo dyes, nitroso compounds and various organic nitrogen compounds, particularly in the rubber industry.

• Pharmaceutical/Medical Use: It acts as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. It works by inducing methemoglobinemia, which binds to cyanide and keeps it from affecting the body's tissues.

• Metal Surface Treatment: Sodium Nitrite is used in processes like phosphatizing and detinning.

• Other Applications: Sodium Nitrite used in photography and as a heat transfer fluid in specialized industrial applications.
